Motorola SURFboard Cable Modem September 5, 2010 Steve Vagnozzi This modem installed easily once Comcast support figured out how to update their system to accept it. I called Motororla support for help with the install and they answered quickly and were knowledgable regarding configuring this product. It has doubled my download speed on my PC with a wired connection to my router.
Not a magic bullet for improving speed or bw September 5, 2010 Frederick P. Barnes (Greenwood, SC USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just got cable a few days ago, and a beat up modem from the cable company. Read up on the SB6120, found one locally, and got it.
Disappointing...not the increase in performance many claim. For me, it's not worth 30% more $$$ over the previous models.
I do think, after some testing online, that it IS an improvement over the older Motorola, but no where near what others claim.
If you are looking to try this out, be sure you get it from a place with a good return policy. You won't know how good it will be
until you try it on your individual connection and cable company. Don't expect miracles.
But if you have money to burn, I would go for it. Recuperating your investment (vs renting) will be a few months longer. But you
do get the latest technology and a bit of the old "future proof".
Installation was a breeze, out here in Hickville Carolina. And this is soooooooo much nicer than DSL.
One thing to remember about providing your own cable modem: If it quits, even under warranty, you will be without anything for a while.
Which means renting for a while or getting a backup. That is one good thing about renting a cable modem.....if it quits, you get a new one
at no cost (except monthly rental fees), quickly.
SB6120 Cable Modem September 4, 2010 william yost (usa) after receiving the modem i contacted Cox, my service provider and activated the modem. the modem performance exceeded my expectation by helping to increase my range and bandwith of my wireless and wire computers.
wireless download bandwith increased about 20% but my upload doubled.
my previous modem was a WRT54gx6. bios could not be upgraded.
i have been using his modem for about i month without any problems. only good results.
i will add this information, since it may be of some help for someone.:
i am running windows xp home with sp3, i have a new linksys e3000n router that this modem works with.
i highly recommend this modem.
Worth the cost. September 2, 2010 C. J. Dorton (VA.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this modem to replace the nearly decade-old modem I received with my Comcast HIS.
Easy to set up.
Well made.
The reviews stating a obvious speed increase were not joking.
The modems' ability to bond multiple channels (DOCSIS 3) should provide an absurd bandwidth increase on networks that support it, providing you have the proper tier of service. Though, even on a single channel (DOCSIS 2? network) I've noticed a 15-20% increase in downstream and upstream bandwidth has increased even further.
If you're on ComcastHIS you can update the MAC tied to your account by simply connecting it, opening an IE window, entering your HIS account number into the Comcast window, then downloading the software and following the prompts. I'm assuming it's ActiveX dependent. (No need to call and all that nonsense if this works as it should.)
High Speed Modem August 31, 2010 Kevin Specter This product works great with my Comcast high speed internet. Great download and upload speeds, and online gaming is excellent.
